All About the MCATs Hello all! Ive been a horrible blogger, please forgive, but I have amassed a boatload of excuses so feel free to complain and Ill send you one back. I assume that most of you have taken the SATs and that you studied pretty hard but found that the material on the test was not that challenging, it was just a matter of learning the tricks and being consistent. For all of you medical school hopefuls (yes, the admissions process never ends, and now I wont be so lucky to get my application read by Matt and Ben), the first step to getting into medical school is submitting an MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) score. So this summer, I have the joy of working at the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) during the day (which is truly a joy) and then taking MCAT classes at night (which is not). The MCAT is curved multiple-choice knowledge-based test out of 45 points with the following schedule: 1) Physical Sciences: chemistry and physics 10 minute break 2) Verbal Reasoning: exactly the same as the passage on the Verbal section of the SATs, except there are nine of them and some are pretty complicated Lunch 3) Writing sample: two 30-minute essays. The essay topics are generally along the lines of a statement like, An understanding of the past is necessary for solving the problems of the present. 10 minute break 4) Biological Science: biology and organic chemistry Yesterday, as part of the Princeton Review prep class that Im taking, I took my first practice test. I thought it would be really difficult to sit still for 8 hours (yes, the test starts at 9 am and generally ends at around 5 pm) but it wasnt so bad apart from the fact that my neck is incredibly sore. The test is on August 19, so until then I have the pleasure of going to 2 1/2 hours of class every night (except for Friday and some Saturdays) and studying and reading the newspaper in my free time. I swear this entry wasnt just to whine. For you pre-meds, I have some advice that was passed onto me a little too late, but hopefully it can help you all with forming your schedules. First off, in order to even take the MCATs, you need to have taken the following classes: 1. Intro Biology (7.012 or 7.013 or 7.014) 2. Intro Chemistry (5.111 or 5.1112 .I dont recommend taking 3.091 because it covers pretty different information, though Sadoway is the man.) 3. Physics I II (8.01 and 8.02) 4. Organic Chemistry I (5.12) Id also recommend taking these classes: 5. Organic Chemistry II (5.13) is recommended but not necessary, I havent taken it yet 6. Biochemistry (5.07 or 7.05) is recommended and is definitely very helpful 7. Genetics (7.03) is becoming increasingly emphasized on the exam 8. Cell Biology (7.06) might be helpful 9. Human Physiology (7.20) would probably be helpful MIT pre-med advisors generally recommend getting taking the MCATs as soon as youre done with the prerequisites, since the test covers a lot of details that are easy to forget after a while. So, try to plan your schedule right. Make sure to take Intro Bio, Physics, and Chem during your freshman year and I would HIGHLY recommend taking Organic Chemistry I (5.12) the second semester of your freshman year. Its a lot of memorization but its great to get it out of the way and not have to worry about squeezing it in later (like me!) If you have any questions, feel free to ask them! Indias infamous caste system, although based on birth and occupation, placed that vast majority of those with extremely dark skin into the lowest caste, classifying them as undesirables or untouchables. Although today the caste system is outlawed and it is prohibited to discriminate against someone based on his or her caste, the widespread beauty ideal of light skin is a subtle reminder of darker days. To feed this cultures obsession with light skin tones, a huge industry dedicated to lightening and skin bleaching creams flourishes in India. Light of My Eyes These coverings leave the eyes at the focus of the females face, or in more extreme communities; only the eyes are left uncovered. These cultural and religious norms have led many predominantly Islamic countries to focus on eyes as the epitome of beauty. This fixation of eyes is an integral part of Arabic culture. As Islam spread throughout the Middle East and into South Asia and Africa, it brought with it modesty practices for women such as the hijab and burka. The strange thing is that even though Romeo and Juliet is a love story and the Paris attacks are terrorist attacks, they are both tragedies. We can compare these tragedies and see their similarities and differences by looking at the total number of casualties, reactions experienced, and at the†¦show more content†¦Romeo then killed himself because he really thinks Juliet is dead. Juliet then awoke from her 42-hour sleep, which was caused by a potion she drank, and found her sweet Romeo de ad. She then progressed to kill herself. Well Romeo’s mother, Lady Montague, was having heart problems and troubles living because her son had been banished. In the end, the poor woman could not handle it, and she passed away. Now, we must take a look at the total number of deaths in the Paris attacks. The total number of casualties was 128 people, with 200 injuries. These attacks occurred in six locations, with 5 being in Paris. These locations were the Stade de France, the Restaurant Le Petit Cambodge, the Rue de la Fontaine au Roi, the Avenue de la Republique, the Concert venue Bataclan, and the Restaurant La Belle Équipe. All of this was confirmed by French officials, the French government, and CNN. With plenty of casualties and tragic events like those experienced in Romeo and Juliet and Paris, we are sure to see many different reactions of the people. I think that the internal factors have more of an impact on a person’s behavior. In the book Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, both factors seem to take part in what caused the boys to turn into savages. Considering that not all the boys turned into savages it helps prove that the bad genes inside versus the good genes played more of a roll and not so much the external environment, in who turned wild and who tried to keep up with the rules of society they knew before they crash landed on the island. Analysis Of Abe Kobo's The Red Cocoon Generally speaking, the purpose of most forms of artistic expression such as literary art, music, or art itself is a mode by which the author can express him/herself with. They use their respective skills and/or interests to convey feelings or thoughts on any given topic. Short fiction is by no means exempt from this. Many writers use their literary skills to express dreams, aspirations, opinions, or even political viewpoints. In order to make a dertermination of a probable origin for a story, research into the authors life and beliefs most likely will prove benefical. With this in mind, Abe Kobo's story ?The Red Cocoon? seems to be a prime example of an author expressing his political viewpoints and his personal conflicts with society through literature. Given this, researching his life and political stance might help to support or negate such an assumption. ?The Red Cocoon? begins with a man walking down a street discussing with himself the problem of not having a house to go home to. The narrator, who is also the main character, jumps abruptly from topic to topic throughout the story, but this reoccuring theme of the lack of a house seems to be a central idea. As the narrator comtemplates, he wonders if he has just forgotten his house and proceeds to knock on the door of a random house to find out if this is what has happened. After he has explained his plight to the woman who answers the door, he begins arguing with her over having proof that it is not his house. Shortly thereafter, the narrator begins to ponder wether or not things such as concrete pipes or park benches are his house. Deciding that they are on their way to belonging to someone or that they belong to everyone and not just one person, he begins to wonder if anything exsists that belongs to no one. At the end of the story, he finds that one of his legs begins to unwind into a silk thread and wrap him up in a cocoon. Abe Kobo's story is quite abstract and seems to have little meaning. In fact, that is just the opposite. After reading some information about Abe Kobo, the story seems to take on a new meaning. Abe Kobo is considered to be one of the leading authors during the post-WWII era of Japanese history. Many of his works use what was then radical artistic methods of literature (?Abe Kobo?). In his early childhood, Abe was living in Manchuria which was occupied by the Japanese at the time. Being born in Japan, altough Abe felt strong ties to the chinese, he was left feeling like an outsider and rejected by both societes. After the war, Abe became more and more antinationalist and was interested in marxism and communism. Soon, he even joined the Japanese Communist Party (?Abe Kobo?). He was quite involved in political issues at this time and many of his early writings preceding the early 60's deal with his issues about society says Clerk and Seigal in Modern Literatures of the Non-Western World (136). With this information about Abe Kobo, an interpretation of ?The Red Cocoon? emerges with heavy political and social tones. The narators central problem of attempting to find out why he does not have a house seems to point to not only Abe's feelings of isolation during his childhood, but also his socialist political viewpoints at the time. ?The Red Cocoon? was written in 1949, a period of Abe's life when he was a strong political activist (Clerk and Seigal, 136). Utopian marxist or communist views on society center around a flat heirarchial structure where no one is more powerful or of a higher class than any other. The property of the country is reffered to as property of everyone and ownership is somewhat denounced in the strictist forms of the political stance. Abe's character in ?The Red Cocoon? seems to be having problems with ownership of houses and other pieces of property. Reporting Verbs for English Language Learners Reporting verbs are verbs that serve to report what someone else has said. Reporting verbs are different than the reported speech in that they are used to paraphrase what someone has said. Reported speech is used when reporting exactly what someone has said. To do this, use  say and tell. John told me he was going to stay late at work.Jennifer told Peter she had lived in Berlin for ten years. Peter said he wanted to visit his parents that weekend.My friend said he would finish his work soon. Other verbs used with reported speech include mention and comment. Here are some examples: Tom mentioned he enjoyed playing tennis.Alice mentioned she could take care of the kids this weekend. The teacher commented the students werent getting their homework done on time.The man commented he felt tired after such a long journey. When using reported speech, change the verb used by the original speaker to match your usage. In other words, if you report using said, you need to move everything back one step into the past. There are also pronoun changes and time cue changes that need to be made as appropriate in reported speech.   I like playing tennis. - Tom mentioned he liked playing tennis.  I have lived in Berlin for ten years. - Jennifer told Peter she had lived in Berlin for ten years.   Say and tell are the most common reporting verbs used to report what others have said. However, there are a number of other reporting verbs which can more accurately describe what someone has said. These verbs take a variety of structures that differ from reported speech. For example: Original Statement I will come to your party. I promise. Reported Speech He said he would come to my party. Reporting Verb He promised to come to my party. In this example, reported speech changes the original verb to would as well as changing the possessive pronoun your to my. In contrast, the reporting verb promise is simply followed by the infinitive. There are a number of formulas used with reporting verbs. So far, IKEA is the largest and most international furniture emporium, globally. (IKEA, 2010 a). As the biggest competitor of IKEA, BQ is a leading company in home decoration and gardening in Europe. It was founded by Richard Block and David Quayle in Portswood, Southampton in 1969. Presently, there are above 60 stores around the world, among which, the largest one in Beijing. (BQ, 2010 a) 1.2 Theory Market segmentation is classifying consumers into groups according to their characteristics (Hall et al, 2008) and set certain groups as targets. Market segmentation consists of four types, including geographic, demographic, psychographic and behavioral type. (Hall et al, 2008). Another concept concerned with market segmentation is marketing mix. It is important in marketing strategy, with a goal of satisfying consumers needs. The basic promotional tool of IKEA is its free catalogue with a list of its products. The IKEA Catalogue includes commodities details, such as colors, sizes and prices.
